Pasta perfection?

I’m cooking more now since I’m working full time and the idea of eating out constantly doesn’t appeal to me. And sometimes I forget to factor in the fact that eating is a part of the day, so guess what happens? Late night cooking. Not smart, but eating remains somewhat of a necessity.

Things I plan to put off until, uh, tomorrow

Relatives are supposedly coming, and I just need to make this spotless. Fatigue seemingly gets in my way more than I’d like, unfortunately.

I know, I know. I whine too much.

Colour me beautiful?

For several weeks, I’ve been taking a makeup artistry class. I figured it is something that could be useful to know, considering that I’m interested in portrait photography. I’m also interested in looking hot too… I forgot to mention that. :P Anyway, that evening I met up with my makeup teacher at MAC Cosmetics to help me choose the right colours for myself. When I got to the cash register, I freaked out — it turns out that I spent over $160! Who knew that cosmetics could be that expensive?! In any case, I consider it an investment, and another step into something I’d like to refer to as “self improvement”.

Fluffed up

This bird has his moods. I don’t think I caught him at his best moment. Oh well.

El Perro del Mar is love

I absolutely adore El Perro del Mar. She’s a musician from Sweden, and her songs are reminiscent of 60’s French pop, with a touch of melancholy. There’s something striking about her voice and the way she emotes her words. Sometimes there’s so much beauty in sadness.

Here’s the video for her very first single, “God Knows (You Gotta Give To Get)”. I love the simple illustrations; there’s something quite charming about them.

Aromatic chocolomatic

Prior to meeting up with other friends for a book discussion, Samantha insisted that we go to Aroma Espresso Bar, located in the heart of the Annex. It was certainly worth the trip — I ordered a hot chocolate and a portobello mushroom sandwich. Yum! The hot chocolate used real chocolate, and it was creamy, rich, frothy and perfect for a cold day.

The ride home

Every day I take the train to work and back, and it’s a pretty dull commute, except for when I start to enter Toronto. I see the high rise apartment buildings that multiply before your eyes. Then I see Skydome (now called the Rogers Centre). And then finally — the CN Tower. Anyway, the ride home is far more boring just because I’m saying goodbye, if only temporarily, to the big city. The further I get from beloved TO, the height of the buildings diminish even more. In life, we always want to be at Point A or B, but nowhere in between. The journey I take every day seems to be sitting on a seat (if I’m lucky) in absolute dead quiet. Sometimes I hear people ruffling their newspapers when they turn the pages or small talk between adults. Thankfully, the ride doesn’t last for too long — 30 minutes at most and then I’m off to said destination.

By the way, if you’re wondering why the window is a mesh screen, that’s because this particular car is covered with advertising on the outside. Even with that in the way, I can still see outside.

And what a sight!

At the hospital, there is a foyer where there are different semi-exotic animals that live in glass encasings. More than often, you’ll see a child excitedly running to get as close as they can to these fascinating creatures. Foreign rats, dragons, budgies, fish… they all take our minds off the hospital atmosphere.

And what a sight!

Hibiscus heaven

There’s this wonderful vegetarian café in Kensington Market called Hibiscus. The food is fresh and most importantly, delicious. As well, the food is inexpensive and the service is good (Hibiscus run by this tall Asian man, and he makes everything by himself on the spot; he does not hire cooks or waiters). All these things combined make me return to this hidden gem, and every time I go there, I bring a friend who is usually a Hibiscus virgin.

That day, I ordered a soup, which I think was coconut shrimp flavoured… I can’t remember. Anyway, served with the soup was this tasty rice cake with some spices on top. Mmmmmmmmm…

The better companion to soup

While we waited for our food, I wanted to test out my new camera a little bit more, and I have this pretty portrait of my dear friend Delphine…

C'est Delphine.
